Launch of IBP in Africa Entebbe, Uganda (June 20-24, 2004)
Family planning, safe motherhood, and sexually transmitted infections are all unfinished agendas in many African countries, and the launch in Africa was designed to refocus attention on the challenges and critical needs in these programmatic areas and identify best practices that can help to address them.
The theme of the meeting was “Repositioning Reproductive Health in Africa: Linking Challenges with Best Practices.”
Meeting Objectives The objective of the meeting was to assist programme managers, policy makers, and implementing organizations in becoming better acquainted with tools and practices that can help them to address major challenges in the field of reproductive health. Capacity building opportunities were also planned to help to better equip the participants to implement best practices through strengthened leadership, performance improvements and change management skills.
The meeting was also a time to network with others in surrounding countries who are facing similar challenges and working on similar, but varying programmes of work.
During the course of the meeting, participants worked with their Country Teams to develop a plan of action to incorporate evidence based best practices into their existing programmes of work. The meeting provided an opportunity to link a follow-up activity with the development of the Action Plan. An individual from one of the IBP Partner organizations has been following up with the team on a regular basis to provide ongoing support, encouragement and assistance, to identify barriers and potential solutions, and to mark and celebrate success.
